Life Works

"We cannot always build the future for our youth,
but we can build our youth for the future".

Franklin D. Roosvelt

  • About Us

LifeWorks is committed to bringing out the best possible life skills in young people about to embark on the next chapter in their lives.

Whether that be university or the workplace, the necessary skills are the same. To be able to walk into a room with confidence, look your interlocutor in the eye without fear, communicate with ease, bring and exhibit the very best of yourself. These are skills which we at LIFE WORKS will help the students harness and keep, so that when the nerves kick in, the coping strategy is there, the training is there, to be able to overcome those nerves and leave a lasting and positive impression.

  • The team

The team at LifeWorks is led by independent theatre producer and communications expert - Josephine Buchan.

Josephine has more than 25 yrs. experience in teaching presentation and communication skills for such companies as: ExxonMobil, British Aerospace, Clarks Shoes, Courage Breweries, the NHS, AIDS Awareness, Bhs, The Metropolitan Police, House of Fraser and many more.

In the field of education Josephine's teaching and lecturing experience have included, among others: The Anna Sher Theatre School, The King's School Canterbury, Sandwich Technology School, Sir Roger Manwood's Grammar School, Thames Valley University, and the University of Kent and Canterbury.

  • What do we offer?

At Life Works we give the value added to the education process, allowing the students to show what they can do, how clearly they can think, how interesting they can be.

Every school in the land is now acutely aware of what a hurdle-filled career path their students are facing, and every school wants to give those students the best possible tools with which to navigate their journey. Just because a student is bright is no indicator of how well they can sell themselves at interview, how well they can handle a social situation which may arise from that interview, or how to react and interact when something unexpected is thrown at them.

  • Why do we do it?

The world in which today's young people find themselves is one of great innovation, rapid growth and ferocious competition.

A good education is no longer sufficient to guarantee a young person a good job, let alone a secure future. They must have a wider set of life skills, a broader understanding of the world and, above all, show an ability to adapt both personally and professionally. As exam results continue to improve year on year, the top universities are now calling students for interview (something which Oxford and Cambridge have been doing for many years) so that they can get a measure of the person behind the exam results. Who are the independent thinkers? Who are the key players of the next generation?

  • How do we do it?

At Life Works we offer students a rounded package of tried and tested solutions to the issues of confidence and public speaking.

Each session usually lasts 3 hours, but can be tailored to fit the needs of the individual school/university. Sessions involve vocal, physical and creative work and work best with no less than 10 and no more than 20 students. At LIFE WORKS we focus very strongly on rhythm. Rhythm in the way you move, rhythm in the way you speak. The most effective and memorable communicators have all had clear rhythm: Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Tony Blair. Rhythm also allows for essential 'silences', those pauses which are so crucial to connecting with your audience, and which cut out the need for the debilitating 'um' and 'er' space fillers.
